Big, Dark, And Handsome: Week 21

Hello from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they are certainly delivering on this “Land of Enchantment” name. It’s still a little odd to be back in a city after the week you’ll read about below. Fair warning – this one’s a doozy, so you might want to pour yourself another cup of coffee or freshen up that drink. Snacks are always encouraged for blog reading purposes.

You’ve Got A Friend In Me: Week 20

Greetings from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where a whirlwind of visits, day trips, hikes, border crossings, and roughly 1,500 miles of driving have unfortunately delayed this dispatch quite a bit longer than I’d hoped for.

Then again, I don’t think even our most dedicated readers (Hi Mom and Dad, and Danny and Daphne) were anxious refreshing the site, wondering why they haven’t been able to enjoy my can’t-put-it-down prose.

When we last left you, we were preparing to host the first friend visit of our journey, our dear friends Joe McGrann and Morgan Yarnoff. (Yes, both myself and one of my oldest friends ended up in long-term relationships with women named Morgan, who themselves are good friends. You’re just going to have to use context clues here.)

Somebody’s Poisoned The Water Hole: Weeks 18 & 19

Hello once again from Austin, where I promise our relative lack of posting isn’t the result of general sleepiness from eating too much barbecue – not to say this isn’t a problem. We’ve been quite busy over the last two weeks – surviving a winter storm, a dayslong citywide boil water advisory, and the effects of plentiful Tex-Mex and barbecue on our digestive tracts.

Keepin’ It Weird in Austin: Week 17

Greetings from Austin (as the mural says), where we are experiencing our first snow day in what feels like quite a while in Texas, of all places.

I’ve been looking forward to coming back to Texas since I visited in late 2018 and road-tripped along the border and through Big Bend. We’ve already been in Austin more than twice as long as I was in Texas last time, but I think it’s important to clarify something. We’re in Austin. It feels like Texas, but only peripherally – it mostly just feels like something different, like Austin. To say this city has some unique vibes would be an understatement.

4 Days in Big Bend: A West Texas Road Trip Pt. 2

This is part two of our four-day Big Bend road trip through West Texas. If you missed it, here’s part one, with days 1 and 2 of the trip.

West Texas Road Trip Day 3: Terlingua to Marfa (122 Miles)

4 Days In Big Bend: A West Texas Road Trip

A long weekend road trip to Big Bend that’ll have you coming back for years to come.

It’s called Big Bend for a reason – people aren’t kidding when they say everything is bigger in Texas. Also known as Far West Texas or Transpecos, it’s larger than South Carolina. Still, it is home to fewer than a hundred thousand people outside the populous El Paso metro. The area is defined by the beautiful, desolate Chihuahuan Desert, North America’s largest, and the sweeping bend in the Rio Grande that gives the region its name. And remote doesn’t even begin to describe most parts of the area. No matter where you are, you’re practically a few hours from anywhere.

All of these issues mean most Americans (and even many Texans) have never made the trek. But they’re missing out on some of the state’s most unbelievable natural beauty, quirkiest small towns, and authentic border culture. With just a few days, you can get a taste of the region that’ll have you coming back for more again and again.
